What is Tenchi Muyo?

Tenchi Muyo is a japanese animation (anime). To describe its genre I would have to say it is a perfect mix of Sci-Fi, Action, Drama, and Comedy. Acually the name Tenchi Muyo includes two OAV (Original Animated Video) series, two TV series (Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo), and three movies (Tenchi Muyo in Love, Daughter of Darkness, and Tenchi Forever). The Movies are made to fit to certain series (Tenchi Muyo in Love and Tenchi Forever with the first TV series and Daughter of Darkness loosely with the OAV's). There is also a comic series that follows where the OAV leaves off. Each series has plot and storyline that does not exactly follow the others. OAV 1 & 2 can basically be concidered the same series and they are the only two that are directly connected.
Many Tenchi fans prefer to call each individual series an "alternate universe," sort of a "what if" causality thing (for each choice or action we have taken in life a universe exists where we did something else- although the anime itself does not really go into this).
All the Tenchi animes use basically the same concept: the story takes place in present day Japan where Tenchi Masaki is your average high school student who stumbles upon a few visitors from outer space, who soon join an ever more eclectic and expanding extended family. While living with his grandfather and father, he first meets the gorgeous space pirate Ryoko (the way they meet is different in each anime), making his formerly average life not-quite-so-average. With the appearance of Ryoko, comes Ayeka, Sasami, Ryo-Ohki, Mihoshi, Washu, and many others (almost all are pretty women, and also most of them compete for the attentions of painfully shy Tenchi). One interesting thing about the story is that in truth Tenchi may not be as normal as you might think at first (and he's not the only one).
The collective Tenchi Muyos are great anime and I would recommend them to any one who likes to be entertained... and who doesn't like to be entertained?^_^
